An authentic U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) drift bottle used to study ocean currents. Starting in 1846, the agency cast these bottles into oceans and gulfs to map global currents, originally containing a brightly colored, rolled-up pink card. Beachcombers who found the bottles were instructed to break the glass, fill out the location and date on the card, and mail it back to the Department of Commerce.
